President Donald Trump announced that his younger brother, Robert Trump, died Saturday evening.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share that my wonderful brother, Robert, peacefully passed away tonight,” Trump said in a statement. “He was not just my brother, he was my best friend. He will be greatly missed, but we will meet again. His memory will live on in my heart forever. Robert, I love you. Rest in peace.”
The president visited his brother in New York on Friday.
ABC News cited sources that described Robert Trump as “very ill” and was hospitalized, but the details of his condition remained unclear. A source close to the Trump family told The New York Times that Robert Trump had recently endured brain bleeds as a result of a fall.
Robert Trump was 71 years old at the time of his death, and had been retired and living in Millbrook, New York, after spending much of his career working for the Trump Organization.
Robert Trump was born in 1948 and was the youngest of the president’s four siblings.
Trump family biographer Gwenda Blair told the Associated Press that Robert Trump “was known as the nice Trump.”
“Robert was the one people would try to get to intervene if there was a problem,” she said.
One ex-Trump Organization executive described Robert Trump to The Times as someone with “zero sense of entitlement.
“He was dignified, he was quiet, he listened, he was good to work with,” Jack O’Donnell told the newspaper. “Robert was very comfortable being Donald Trump’s brother and not being like him.”
Robert Trump was also supportive of his older brother’s presidential bid, though the brothers were estranged for years beforehand, according to The Times.
