Sept. 10 — To the Editor:

A mask mandate is overdue here in Portsmouth. The City Council has yet to pass a straightforward ordinance requiring people wear face coverings indoors and outdoors when 6 foot social distancing is not possible. I’m so disappointed with this dysfunctional gridlock. If Nashua, Newmarket, Durham and Exeter can enact a face mask mandate why not Portsmouth?

Members of the Council are elected to enact laws as dictated by events. Unfortunately, some on the council are obstructionists. Navel-gazing and inventing far-fetched scenarios are not problem solving. We need science-based measures, like mask mandates, that will mitigate the spread of Covid 19.
