OPINION: The Government could do a lot better for Taranaki. I’m talking about the energy and engineering sector, and specifically the decommissioning of the FPSO Umuroa and the offshore Tui oil field.

When the Government made its decision in April 2018 banning future exploration permits, they said they would adopt a “Just Transition” approach focused on helping workforces transition.

So you’d hope the Government would be all over the massive opportunity for Taranaki’s world-class engineering sector to be given the lead on the offshore work of decommissioning the Tui field.

In June this year I questioned Megan Woods, Minister of Energy and Resources, as she sat in front of my Economic Development, Science and Innovation Parliamentary Committee, whether there will be opportunities for Taranaki firms in the decommissioning programme.
