I first looked at the proposed Children’s Services Council with a great deal of skepticism. The programs funded through the council are done so through a tax, and I generally think we have enough programs and taxes. But that was a gut reaction and I realized I needed to dig in and learn more. So I started attending public meetings, volunteered and studied the details so I could better appreciate the structure of the CSC and the challenges our community faces.
After two years of examining this, here is what I learned: Poverty is the root of nearly all our problems and the CSC has the ability to implement programs that will reduce poverty in our community.
From gun violence and drug use to infant mortality, poverty is almost always part of the equation.
