IBM Corp. said today the creators of an application that helps to connect and provide support for small farmers around the world have won the grand prize of its 2020 Call for Code Global Challenge.

Call for Code is an annual contest held by IBM that invites developers to create and deploy applications based on open-source technology that can tackle some of the most pressing challenges in the world.

The Agrolly app was created by a distributed team of developers based in Brazil, India, Mongolia and Taiwan who first met at Pace University in New York City. Tasked with creating a solution that can help communities fight back against climate change and COVID-19, they came up with Agrolly as a way to provide help and support for small farmers in developing nations that are struggling with reduced crop yields as a result of climate change.

Tracking phone calls for proper advertising and marketing analytics has long been significant to the success of small businesses. The ability to track call data is paramount to keeping your business sustainable, especially during the pandemic.

Small businesses in almost every sector have had their share of challenges and setbacks the past six months. Now, as the economy recovers, it can be harder for small businesses to bounce back.

Larger companies have deeper pockets, so it can be difficult for small businesses to compete on price and promotions. And smaller businesses have to be more creative with their modest marketing budgets to keep (or revive) old customers and find new ones. Putting the budget they do have toward the right strategies—and iterating on those strategies in real time—can be the deciding factor on how soon a small business gets in the black again.

India, along with six other countries, has released an international statement calling on technology companies to provide backdoor encryption access to law enforcement agencies under certain circumstances.

India, along with Japan joined members of the intelligence sharing alliance Five Eyes, comprising the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand to detail their stance on encryption and public safety in a statement released over the weekend.

The seven signatories in their statement, began by highlighting the importance of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) in protection privacy and safety of an individual, citing a report by UN Human Rights Council.

“Encryption is an existential anchor of trust in the digital world and we do not support counterproductive and dangerous approaches that would materially weaken or limit security systems,” the statement read.

However, the statement then pivots to the “challenges” posed by E2EE in maintaining public safety.

“Particular implementations of encryption technology,

Before borders closed due to the pandemic, Sigourney Weaver was able to travel to Paris in January to shoot a highly anticipated episode of “Call My Agent!,” the hit French series that’s available on Netflix worldwide (the fourth season drops Nov. 4). The first international actor to participate in the ensemble series, Weaver was quick to accept the part which sees her taking part in a French movie. The experience allowed her to dive into comedy which she rarely does, as well as practice her fluent French. With “Call My Agent!” set to close Canneseries this week, Weaver spoke to Variety about her experience working on the French show, the dilemma of moviegoing versus streaming during the pandemic and her work life in the Covid era.

I heard that you said ‘yes’ to be in this show in only a few hours. What made you so enthusiastic about the prospect

Not when you find out what Stuff, formerly known as Delegate, sells. For $50 a month, its mobile app gives you instant access to a network of personal assistants around the United States. They handle tasks such as sending flowers, finding a plumber, or booking the perfect rental home for a family ski vacation. You communicate with them via Stuff’s app — which feels similar to text messaging.

People like Ain, who runs a 12,000-person company, have their own personal assistants on payroll; his has been working alongside him for 25 years. “If she found out I was using Stuff, she’d come to my house and punch me in the nose,” he says.

So Stuff is a bit like Uber, Zipcar, or Turo — disruptive startups that give you access to a nice set of wheels at a much lower price than buying them outright. “It democratizes

As critical conversations about systemic racism in America continue, Yelp is sending a notable message to business owners on its popular review site.

Yelp said yesterday it was rolling out new alert features to make consumers aware of alleged racist behavior. If moderators notice an unusual uptick in activity on a particular page, they will investigate and temporarily disable content.

Yelp said it would use a “public attention alert” if someone associated with a business was accused of, or the target of, racist behavior.

A more strongly-worded notification, “business accused of racist behavior alert” would be employed “when there’s resounding evidence of egregious, racist actions from a business owner or employee, such as using overly racist slurs or symbols.” The second alert would also feature links to news stories from credible outlets, Yelp said.

“At Yelp, we value diversity, inclusion and belonging, both
